Zelmer Brooks Griffin, 89, of the Laurel community of Carroll County died at his home on Saturday, April 5, 2008. He was born on August 12, 1918, the son of the late Bruce and Alverta Griffin. He was preceded in death by his daughter Rheda G. Cross; son-in-law Albert T. (Tom) Thompson; brothers Ellis Griffin and spouse Bernice, Glenn Griffin; and brother-in-law Herm Towe. Mr. Griffin is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Nomeka Beasley Griffin of the residence; by his devoted daughter Effie G. Thompson of Rural Retreat, VA; son-in-law Lawrence Cross of The Villages, FL; brothers and sisters-in-law Elmer & Elsie Griffin of Hillsville, Coolidge & Pansy Griffin of Austinville; Rush & Kathleen Griffin of Austinville; and John Lewis Griffin of Austinville; sister Lydia Towe of Cana, VA; a close niece Faye Lineberry of Hillsville, in addition to several nieces and nephews; and a very special caregiver Linda Burnett. He was a devoted Christian and a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church, and was baptized on August 18, 1957. He was also an original trustee of the Thomas Beasley Cemetery. He retired from the Radford Arsenal in 1980, at which time his full time occupation became hunting and fishing with his brothers.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder Ronald Bowman and Elder Tim McGrady officiating. Burial will follow in the Thomas Beasley Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 7, 2008 from 6 to 8 PM at the Vaughan Guynn McGrady Chapel.
