William Daly "Lucky" Woodyard Born in Pearisburg, Virginia on April 9, 1942 to Ephriam Stanley Woodyard and Mattie Cecelia Roberts. Loving husband to Shelia McClanahan Woodyard of 53 years. Devoted father to daughter Terry W. Scott and husband Jeff Scott of Hillsville, Tammy W. Smith of Hillsville, Pamela W. Kennedy and husband Bradley S. Kennedy of Hillsville. Brother and sister-in-law Stanley "Bucky" and Jean Woodyard of Christiansburg; grandchildren and spouses, Lauren and Anthony Jones, Kallie and Collin Metz, Gavin Scott, Rachel Dalton, Mattie Kennedy, and Abigail Kennedy; great grandson, Matthew Jones; and many special friends. The Woodyard family lost a devoted husband and loving father and Papaw on Monday, August 24th. He began his career at the Carroll News as the managing editor and served there for 24 years in many capacities. Afterwards he was proudly employed at Jeff Johnson Chevrolet for many years before he retired in 2001. Anyone that knew or met him understood his love of all things sports related. He played basketball; football; baseball and ran track at Pearisburg High School. He played softball for the H.K. Neff for many years, and developed a passion for the game of golf. Through both these passions, he developed lifelong friendships and comradery. After retirement he enjoyed playing golf with buddies and followed his grandchildren in football and basketball. Otherwise a nonconfrontational, conflict avoiding man, he was not afraid to "correct" referees or umpires during Carroll County High School sporting events. Through his love of sports he also adopted many young athletes at CCHS and enjoyed it when they referred to him as "PaPaw." He was a doting grandfather who took great pride in the accomplishments of his grandchildren. Just recently he celebrated the birth of his 1st great grandchild, college graduations for 2 granddaughters, high school graduation of his grandson, and granddaughters wedding. He was quick witted, loved telling jokes and stories. He was kind hearted and could say many things with few words. He valued family and friends and that was evident by all that knew him. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Carroll County High School Athletics. Heartfelt thanks for all the visits, calls, cards and food during Lucky's illness and passing. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel at 4:00 PM with Mr. Ed Buchanan and other family and friends officiating. Burial will follow in Round Knob Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 2:00 until 4:00 PM prior to the funeral service.
