William Franklin
Copeland
August 12, 1932 – November 23, 2022
At the close of day on Wednesday November 23, 2022- William Franklin Copeland (Doc) went to Heaven to join his wife of 70 years and His Holy Savior.
A native of Danville, Va. Bill graduated from Schoolfield High School in 1950. Bill was a veteran in the U.S. Marines as well as the U.S. Navy where he served in the Naval Hospital Corp School.
On November 21, 1951, Bill married Bobbie Hardy and they began their life together- moving to Richmond, VA for Bill to attend the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy. Bill graduated from MCV in 1960 and began his pharmacy career in Danville, Virginia at Lee Drug. In 1965 their family relocated to Hillsville, Virginia to open Carroll Drug where he served his community and customers for a multitude of years. Carroll Drug then transitioned to Blue Ridge Pharmacy. Bill employed a multitude of "teens" that always wanted to work for Doc. Bill also was "William Tells 'Em" writing a what's happening column for the Carroll News. A member of First United Methodist Church in Hillsville, VA since 1965, he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Lay Leader and as a member of numerous committees.
During his career Bill served as the President of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association from 1978-1979 and 1980-1983 as President of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association of Research and Education Foundation. In 1985 Bill achieved the 33rd degreed of the Ancient and excepted Scottish Rite in the Free Masons and also in 1985, Bill received the outstanding community service award from VFW Grover King Post 1115 and Ladies auxiliary for many years of service.
As an active member of the Hillsville Rotary receiving perfect attendance 30+ years, Bill was the recipient of the Rotary International Paul Harris Award for plus 5. Rotary established the recognition in 1957 to encourage and show appreciation for substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation's only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships.
In 1997 Bill received the Bowl of Hygeia award. Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities. In addition to service through their local, state, and national pharmacy associations, award recipients devote their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service outside the profession.
Bill is predeceased in death by his wife, Bobbie Hardy Copeland; his parents, Alvin Clark and Lula Catherine Copeland; his second daughter and mother to Kimberly and Sara, Linda Copeland Catron; and his sister, Nancy Carolyn Dix.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Copeland (Bobby Sumner) and Laurie Porter (Roger); grandchildren, Stacy Marshall (Jesse) and their daughter Katie; Kimberly Kaiko (James) and Kimberly's son Zachary, Sara Tutor (Joe) and their sons Colton and Knox, William Griggs (Ashton) and their daughters Charlotte and Avery, and Lauren Silcox (Benjamin) and their sons Benjamin and Brooks; sister, Cathy Compton (Dwight) and their daughters, Cathy Jo Lanter (Jeff- and their daughters, Emma and Addison) and Lindsay Brooke Compton (Katelyn).
Services will be at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel on Saturday, December 3rd, 2022, with family visitation at 11 a.m. and a memorial service to follow at noon. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
