Willborne Augustus Smith, 83, of Hillsville, passed away peacefully in his home on October 25, 2011. He was born September 18, 1928 in Coalwood, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his father William Augustus Gus Smith and his mother, Tencie Goodman Smith. After serving his country in the Navy, Willborne went on to receive his degree from Virginia Tech. His life was spent educating and inspiring the youth and the young adults of Pulaski, Carroll, and Wythe counties, retiring from Wytheville Community College in 1990. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. His many interests included debating politics, chess, golf, fishing, woodworking, and drafting. He is survived by his wife, Carol Wolfe Smith, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffery and Lisa Smith of Colorado and Dean and Elizabeth Smith of Hillsville; two grandsons, Michael Smith and Nicholas Smith; two step-grandsons, Alexander and Christopher Davison; one sister, Loretta Dye of Bristol; two brothers, Clayton Perry Smith of Hillsville and David L. Smith of Fancy Gap; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with burial following will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Smith-Lindsey Cemetery with Rev. David Hazlewood and Rev. Eugene Baldwin officiating. The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
