Werner Robert Tobler, age 64, passed away September 14, 2023 at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Virginia surrounded by his family. Werner was born at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey to Dorothy Ann Sokat Tobler and Werner Walter Tobler. In his early years Werner resided with his family in Wyckoff, New Jersey. In 1965 the Tobler family moved its textile business to Hillsville, Virginia where it became the Blue Ridge Woven Label Company. Werner attended the local schools in Hillsville graduating from Carroll County High School in 1977. He then attended Ferrum College graduating in 1979 with a degree in criminal justice. Werner worked in various local jobs but mainly at Hanes Brands in Galax, briefly drove a tractor and trailer, and then started an internet business with his girlfriend and partner Becky McClung.
Werner was predeceased in death by his parents, Werner and Dorothy Tobler, his sister Verne Anne Tobler, and his girlfriend Becky McClung.
Werner loved oldies music, fast cars and Nascar racing. He was a collector and seller of die cast cars. He loved traveling, cruising in his cars, and shopping. He was a fan of Virginia Tech Football, Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, and Darrell Waltrip and Wood Brothers racing.
Werner is survived by his sister Trudi Tobler Dunham (Dave) of Roanoke, and his brother Richard W. Tobler (Sandra) of Patrick Springs. He is survived by two nieces Elizabeth VK Dunham of Roanoke and Sally Tobler Rondeau of Daleville, a great niece, Nora Ruth Rondeau, of Daleville and cousins Frieda Wimmelman Binnick (Alan) and Peter Wimmelman, Jr. (Nancy) both of Wilmington, Vermont. A host of beloved friends he leaves behind Jimmy Bullion, Curtis Webb, Larry Lovell, Andrew Blackburn, Larry Nester and Roy Atwell. Werner was a good guy. He loved a good joke and had a cheery word with all. He was a master of word search books and as a collector enjoyed finding the perfect pen.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the local SPCA.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel at 2:00 PM with Rev. John Franklin officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the memorial service.
