Wayne Fredrick
Zschernig
January 27, 1939 – April 25, 2011
Wayne Fredrick Zschernig, 72 of Hiwassee passed away on Monday, April 25th at his home on Huckleberry Hill (his little bit of Heaven). He was known to most as Mr. Z. Mr. Z was born on January 27, 1939 to the late Fred and Dorothy Zschernig in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Z resided in East Detroit, Michigan most of his life, except for a few years in the 70s where he lived in Hiwassee, Virginia. He never forgot the beauty of the land or the people and yearned to return there someday. He got that wish when he retired from Pitney Bowes, General Motors. He retired to Huckleberry Hill, to the land and the view he loved. In the end he found his little bit of heaven on this earth. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, (out of Norfolk, Virginia) where he met his lovely wife of 47 years. He was a devoted family, a viewer of westerns, watcher of NASCAR, an avid hockey fan of the Detroit Red Wings, and he loved waffles. In retirement he reveled in his friendships with co-workers and customers from Food City in Pulaski, Virginia. He also enjoyed being apart of the community. He is survived by his lovely wife Willow Dean Zschernig and a son Jeffrey Allen Zschernig of Eastpointe, Michigan. In addition he is survived by an older sister Diane Mayer of the Villages, Florida. A younger sister Darlene Boice of Harrison Twp., Michigan. Also a younger brother Gilbert Zschernig of Eastpointe, Michigan.
The family would like to thank all the neighbors, Food City employees/customers and church community for all the support during these past years. Also the family wishes to thank the Pulaski Hospital (& Cancer Center), UVA, and the Hospice program for all their efforts during this past year.
The viewing will be held this Friday, April 29th from 3-8, at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Virginia. The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 30th at Dinwiddie Presbyterian Church at 2pm with Pastor Chris Carlisle officiating. The burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. Goodbye Dad, I love you.
