Funeral services for Warren and Virginia Holtgrew will be held June 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Hillsville First United Methodist Church with a visitation prior to the service. Burial will be at the Jerusalem United Methodist Cemetery, Elk Creek, Va. following the service.

Warren August Holtgrew, 93, passed away June 20, 2026, at Commonwealth Senior Living in Hillsville. His wife, Virginia Dell (Jackson) Holtgrew, 90, died Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Commonwealth Senior Living.

Warren August Holtgrew was born on February 25, 1933, near Winside, Nebraska, to Henry and Lottie (Koch) Holtgrew. He attended school at District #28 South and Winside Public School, graduating in 1951. He then attended Norfolk Junior College before joining the U. S. Army. Warren was stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado until March 31, 1956, when he received his discharge.

Virginia Dell Holtgrew was born on April 29, 1935, in Winside, to John Kent and Etta (Overman) Jackson. She attended school at Rural District 58 and Winside Public School, graduating in 1952.

Warren and Virginia were married on December 31,1954, at the Winside United Methodist Church. They lived in Colorado until 1956 when they moved back to Nebraska and farmed southeast of Winside for 25 years. Then for 25 years, they lived on an estate on the Gulf Coast of Florida where they were caretakers. Their final move was to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. The Holtgrews were active in the United Methodist Church wherever they lived. Virginia played organ, and when they moved to Virginia, they both took care of the West Galax United Methodist Church lawn. Warren got to use a John Deere lawn tractor in Florida and Virginia which was one of his favorite things to do. They had two daughters, Patti and Della.

Warren and Virginia are survived by their daughters Patti Burris of Winside and Della Wright of Troutville, Virginia; and grandchildren Emma Burris-Janssen and Caroline Burris, both of Winside as well as nieces and nephews. Warren was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years Virginia, his parents, brother William and sister Lois, two sons-in-law, and two nephews. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Charles Jackson, two sons-in-law and two nephews.

Memorials may go to the Jerusalem United Methodist Cemetery, Elk Creek, Va.

Arrangements are by Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Virginia.
