Obituary

Virginia Baker Marshall, 84, passed peacefully on April 9, 2025, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.  She was born Virginia Carroll Baker, the fifth of nine children, to Posey and Rodoska Baker of Carroll County, VA, on August 6, 1940--but for almost 60 years, she called Kernersville, NC, her home.  Virginia grew up in the close-knit Coon Ridge community, with her siblings and neighbors, and attended Hillsville High School before beginning her work at the Hanes Factory.

Virginia wed Wayne Marshall, of Sunnyside, VA, in Sparta, NC, on November 11, 1965, and the two were happily married for nearly 35 years before Wayne's death in 2000; she is now joyfully reunited with him.  Virginia worked as a hairdresser and licensed cosmetologist until her health caused her to stop working in 1996.  Even with her health concerns, she remained a talented painter, quilter, crocheter, poet, and gardener until her death.  She was a devoted member of the congregation at Oaklawn Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, and she loved her church family as dearly as her kin.

She is survived by her daughters, Brenda (Marc) Cramer and Samantha (Alexander) Gale, and her granddaughters Alex Senart and Athena Gale, as well as her sisters Eillen Moran and Elva Price, and her sister-in-law, Faye Marshall Mills.

Virginia is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wayne; her parents, Posey and Rodoska Baker; her sisters Freeda Moore, Jewel Lineberry, Geneva Goad, Guida Weddle, and Belva Baker; and her brother, Moir Eugene Baker; as well as her grandson, Jason Emanuel.

There will be a visitation held at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, VA, from 12:30-1:30pm on Monday, April 14, with a graveside service to follow at the Worrell Cemetery, also in Hillsville.  A Celebration of Life reception will be held on Tuesday, 15 April, at Oaklawn Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in Virginia's memory to the Primetimers of Oaklawn Baptist Church, with whom Virginia shared many wonderful adventures.

Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
