Hurst
October 21, 1915 – August 19, 2010
Vernon Hurst born October 21, 1915; passed away August 19, 2010. Mr. Hurst was preceded in death by his parents, E.C. (Connie) and Stella Jackson Hurst; his wife of 55 years, Elva Huff Hurst; brother L. Carl Hurst; and sister, Jeanette Hurst Lane. He is survived by his brother & sister-in-law Oren & Doris Hurst of Hillsville and several nieces and nephews.
Vernon enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1941 where he served as a bomb sight mechanic and bombardier with the 344th Bomb Squad. Following WW II, Vernon worked as a semi-truck driver and was an owner-operator of a motel located on US Highway #11. After the construction of interstate #81, he accepted a position with the Pulaski County School System as a school bus shop supervisor and remained there until his retirement.
He was a member of the Pythagoras Lodge #239 F.M. & A.M. and The New River Shrine Club of Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. Both Vernon and his wife Elva enjoyed the meetings and activities with their many friends of the Order of The Eastern Star. Vernon was a member of the Drapers Valley Presbyterian Church for many years.
A graveside service will be conducted at the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating.
