Obituary

Vera Lea Mullins, age 80 of Pound, VA went to be with her Lord on Saturday August 12, 2017 after enduring a long and courageous battle of cancer. Our mother fought with dignity and grace.

Vera was preceded in death by her biological father Joseph Harold Baker and her real father Ray C. Short as well as her mother Dessie Beatrice Short. Her brother Randall Short preceded her in death as well. Her husband, Rufus Lafayette Mullins (RL) of 61 years preceded her in death in 2012.

Vera is survived by her four children: Rhonda and Dewey Salyers of Pound, VA, Vickie King of Randleman, NC, Tony and Tilda Mullins of Hillsville, VA and Joe and Terri Mullins of Randleman, NC.

Eight grandchildren also survive her: JW Salyers and wife Amber, Eric Salyers and wife Amanda, Ashley King, Stephanie King, Ben Mullins, and wife Devanie, Nathaniel Mullins and wife Chelsea, Jordan Mullins, and Kaitlyn Mullins. Five grandchildren also survive her: Carlee, Braydon, Trey, Jayla, and Lukas Salyers.

Vera is survived by her brother Freddie Short and sisters-in-law Anita Short, Joyce Short, Sue Mitchum, Marie Delaney, Rita Maggard, Eleanor Jackson, and Ginny Ventro. Greg Ventro is her only remaining brother-in-law. Several nieces and nephews survive her.

Vera was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Hubbard Chapel Church in Pound, VA. She attended Hubbard Chapel for 20+ years.

Vera was dedicated to her family. She showed them over and over what it meant to be strong and to fight and never give up. She was such an inspiration to us in so many ways. She never followed anyone's rules but her own even during the sickness. She didn't give into the cancer until it overtook her in a way that she could not battle any longer. Mommy you will be missed and remembered always. We had so many fun times individually and as a family. You gave us a lifetime of love that will last until our ends.

Baker Funeral Home of Pound will be in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Mon. Aug. 14, 2017 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm with the funeral service following at 12:00 pm. Burial will be in the family cemetery.

This is a courtesy announcement provided by Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel.
