Matthews Semones
September 3, 1931 – March 27, 2025
Vera Mae Semones, 93, of Hillsville, peacefully passed away on March 26th at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on September 3rd, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Geneva and Clarence Matthews.
Vera has now been reunited with her beloved husband of nearly 65 years, Orba Semones, whose love for her was a guiding light in their lives. Their deep bond brings comfort to all who loved them, knowing they are together again. Vera is also preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Matthews, and her sister, Gayle Amburn.
She leaves behind a loving family, including her son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Anita Semones; her granddaughter and her husband, Maddie and Austin Horton; and a host of dear extended family. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Shirley Semones, Esther Bryant, and Wilma Matthews, and her brothers-in-law Roger Amburn, Allen Robinson, and Norman Semones. Vera also cherished her close friendship with Norman's wife, Ruby Semones, who was like a sister to her.
Vera was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and she took great pride in her family. She had a passion for storytelling, often sharing cherished memories and passing down treasured recipes. Her love of reading, along with her skill for crossword puzzles and word games, provided her with endless hours of enjoyment. Anyone who had the pleasure of sampling Vera's cooking knew that her sweet tea and coleslaw were something special, and they will always be remembered fondly.
A hardworking woman with a heart of gold, Vera spent many years working at Globman's Department Store in Galax. She then dedicated 38 years of service to the Carroll County Department of Social Services before retiring in 1991. Vera was also an integral part of the family-owned Sunny Side store and farm. Whether running errands or delivering surprise treats to the crew, Vera's caring and dependable nature made her a true pillar of support for everyone around her. She also ensured the farmhands were always well-fed during long days in the fields.
Vera was a valued member of her community, actively involved in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Hillsville Friendship Club, and the Carroll County Wellness Center. She generously volunteered her time and talents to various organizations throughout her life.
Though Vera's physical presence will be deeply missed, her memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family and community will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
