Shirley Rowe Scarey, 82, of Hillsville, wife of Charles (Ned) Scarey, passed away Monday, July 31, 2006 at Twin County Regional Hospital. Shirley was a native of Hoosick Falls, NY, daughter of Hiram Rowe and Helena Shaughnessy Rowe. She and her husband Ned were married in Hoosick Falls in 1949 and have been residents of Hillsville, VA since 1977. Shirley was predeceased by two sisters Eleanor Jenuskevice and Patricia Rasch and a brother Robert Rowe.
She is survived by her husband Ned and five children; sons Michael Scarey & wife Linda Vane of Seattle, WA and Tom Scarey and partner Karin Stevens of Everett, WA, daughters Maureen Garmon of Tucson, AZ, Margaret Sowers & husband Neil of Roanoke and Linda Scarey of Roanoke. Survivors also include five grandchildren: Sarah Adams, Conor Garmon, Chris Garmon, Lindsay Scarey and Marie Scarey, one great grandchild Mic ONeill, brother Paul Rowe and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Shirley always had a song in her heart and was a favorite actress and singer in local theater and old time minstrel shows. She loved dancing to the music of the Big Band era, especially the jitterbug. She was a wonderful cook and avid baker, famous for her chocolate chip cookies and her homemade pies.
Shirley was a devout Catholic and had a deep love for her family and her church family. Through many adversities, she remained cheerful and was an inspiration to everyone who was fortunate to be touched by her. She will be greatly missed by all.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday morning at 11:00 A.M. at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Woodlawn, VA with Father Charles Brickner officiating. Burial will follow in Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery. A family visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at St. Josephs Catholic Church.
