Shirlene Thompson Slate, 87 of Hillsville, passed away on January 4, 2026 at her daughter's home in Florida.  Mrs. Slate was born in Dugspur, Virginia to the late Sherman and Edith Dalton.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Thompson Nester.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Damon Tarquinio; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel at 11:00 AM with Dr. Ricky Atkins officiating.  Burial will follow in the Nester Cemetery on Poplar Hill Drive in Dugspur.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.  There will be a celebration of life meal at the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Dugspur VA for family and friends following the burial services. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
