Obituary

Sherwood T. Van Campen, age 90, recently passed away at his home in Hillsville, Virginia.  He was born in St. Augustine, Florida to John Tyler and Elizabeth Dismukes Puller Van Campen.  He is survived by his wife Gay of 60 years; four sons, John Tyler (Jennifer) of Raleigh, NC, Paul Sherwood of the home, Elliott (Andrian) and Tyler both of Radford, Virginia; and one grandson, Sherwood Gabriel. Sherwood was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Gay of Wilmington, NC and two sisters, Mary Duncan Rosborough and Elizabeth Lee Caldwell both of Jacksonville, FL.

He graduated from high school in St. Augustine, FL.  Following graduation, he served several years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.  Following military service, he graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL.

He worked for Sears, Roebuck and Company for 20 years as the merchandise manager in many stores throughout the southeastern US.  He was then hired by Duke University/Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC to work in the material supply department.  He retired following another 20 years of service.

He and his wife Gay and son, Paul retired to Hillsville, Virginia, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia.

At his request, Sherwood will be cremated and there will be no services at this time.  Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
