Rufus Glendi Bunn, 88, of Fancy Gap, Virginia passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hillsville, Virginia. He was born on February 8, 1919, in Fancy Gap, Virginia to the late Kenny Lawrence and Margaret McCraw Bunn. Rufus will be remembered as a life-long farmer, community leader, husband, father, and friend. As a vegetable farmer, dairyman, and beef producer he utilized modern methods to mold a living from the land he farmed. He was instrumental in forming and leading the Fancy Gap Community Improvement Club and in bringing about the consolidation of the one and two room schools to create Fancy Gap Elementary School. Serving as president of Carroll County Farm Bureau, he helped to bring about a greater awareness of the needs of farmers. Rufus served on the board of directors of Dairymen Incorporated, an organization to promote the areas dairy industry. He served as Committeeman on the Carroll County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee representing his area of the county. He served on the Carroll County Southern States Corporation Board and the Carroll-Grayson Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Bunn was a charter member of the Boy Scout Troop 286 in the 1950s and helped to re-charter the troop in 1980. His greatest involvement was with the Fancy Gap United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Official Board, and on many internal committees as well. He was instrumental in construction of the educational building, and in remodeling the church sanctuary.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Calvin and Hampton Bunn. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Rita R. Bunn, a son & daughter-in-law Joe H. and Ruth B. Bunn of Fancy Gap, a daughter Evelyn Joyce Bunn of Galax; four grandchildren and spouses Kim and Allen Robinson, Brian and Beth Bunn, Brett and Jennifer Bunn and Joel and Amy Bunn; six great-grandchildren Jon & Kymbre Robinson, Austin, Emily and Erin Bunn, and Vivian Bunn; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family expresses special gratitude to Southwest Home Health Care and especially to Crystal Savage, and to Trinity Mission Health and Rehabilitation for care and support during the last months. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 23, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville with Rev. Wendell Horton and Rev. Layne Pennington officiating. Interment will follow in Independence Cemetery in Fancy Gap. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
