Ruby Inez
Mcgrady Akers Carrington
April 7, 1925 – August 31, 2025
Ruby Inez McGrady Akers Carrington passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 31, 2025, fulfilling her dream of going to her Heavenly home. Ruby leaves behind a legacy of kindness, care and compassion for all, generosity, and most importantly, unconditional love for her family, friends, and her church where she was a life lifelong member; serving in many capacities and was a charter member of the WSCS, currently the UMW.
Ruby began her working career in 1944 as an employee of the Carroll County Rationing Board before working at the Carroll Hosiery Mill. Following her graduation from Hardbarker Business College, she worked as a Carroll County Deputy Commissioner of Revenue before moving to the Carroll County Department of Social Services from where she retired.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Martha McPeak McGrady; husbands, Dyer Akers and Robert (Bob) Carrington; brothers and spouses Elihu and Vera McGrady, Owen (Tex) and Dawn McGrady, and Leroy McGrady; sisters and spouses, Rava and Granville Nester, Odessa and Friel Padgett; sister-in-law Vera Mae McGrady; daughters and spouse, Pat and James Hagwood, Georgianna Taylor, and grandchildren, Laurie, Debra, Jeff, Staci, and Michael.
Left to cherish her memory; daughters and spouses, Janet Rae and Larry Joe Banks, Suzanne and Larry Collins, and Effie Sue and E.W. Utt. brother, Melvin McGrady and sister-in-law, Shernell McGrady, 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 18 great-great grandchildren, and dearly loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to Galax Mountain Valley hospice workers Stephanie Goad, Melissa Burleson, Wanda Wiles, Allison Johnson, Nikki Campbell, and Michelle Crawford. We also offer deepest gratitude to special nieces, Alice Eure and Rebecca McKee.
A funeral service in celebration of her life will be held at Vaughan Guynn McGrady Funeral Chapel in Hillsville, Virginia on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11:00 am. Family will receive visitors from 10:00 am to 11:00 am before the service. Interment will follow at the Mountain Plains Cemetery.
