Roger Wayne Surratt, born on August 26, 1952, in Blacksburg, Virginia to Lester Surratt and Lucy Hodge Surratt, passed away peacefully at his home in Hillsville, Virginia, on July 25,2026 after a long battle with lung cancer and emphysema.
Roger was the beloved husband of Irene Chermack Surratt, with whom he shared 50 wonderful years of marriage. Their love story began while they were both serving in the United States Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Roger went on to make the Army his lifelong career, serving his country for 30 years before retiring.
In addition to his devoted wife, Roger is survived by his son, Roger Surratt Jr.; his daughters, Jessica Soto and her husband, Martin, of Hillsville, Virginia; Stephanie Frame and her husband, Ben, of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; and Karen Lallave and her husband, Rick, of Woodlawn, Virginia. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He never let them leave his home without a handful of candy .
Roger is also survived by his brother, Tony Surratt of Bassett, Virginia, and his sisters, Patricia Ross and Melanie Carroll, also of Bassett, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Lisa Elliott.
Roger will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He found joy in the beauty of nature and had a special affection for the raccoons he cared for and watched over.
Rogers quiet strength, kindness, and tender heart will be remembered by those who loved him.
His family finds comfort in God’s promise of a future reunion in Paradise, where they look forward to seeing Roger again—healthy, strong, and at peace—where love never ends.
