Obituary

Robert Stanton King, 66 of Austinville, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.  Mr. King was born in Winston Salem, NC to the late Dr. Jonathan Stanton and Betty Boyd King.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Melissa King Gammon; and a sister that was still-born, Melinda King.

Robert was a proud 1980 graduate of N.C. State.  Even though he lived in Virginia Tech country, he was still a dedicated Wolf Pack fan.  Mr. King was employed by Harmon Turf Services for over 35 years.  He was known for his hard work ethic and got to work at some of the most beautiful golf courses on the East Coast.  Rob faithfully attended 3 to 4 church services each Sunday and was widely respected for his dedication to his wife's call to the pastoral ministry.  He never met a stranger and was a friend to all.

Survivors include his wife, Pastor Betsy King; many Boyd cousins; and in-laws, Anne and Joe Harmon, Chuck Street, Michael Harmon, Jesse Harmon, Dana Baber, Jack Street, Boss Bond-Harmon, Rorie Bond, Annabelle Triplett, and C.J. Julian (Jessica); and his beloved pets, Bruce Almighty, Gabby, Reacher and Jenny.

The family wishes to express a very special thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care of Rob through his illness. Also, a special thank you to New Mount Olive United Methodist Church, New Hope United Methodist Church, and Carter Street United Methodist Church for their love and support.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at the First United Methodist Church in Hillsville at 12:00 PM with Pastor Ty Harrison and Pastor Jason Ratliff officiating.  The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Mount Olive United Methodist Church 309 Russell Avenue, Radford, VA 24141 or New Hope United Methodist Church P.O. Box 145 Radford, VA 24141.  Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
