Robert L. Johnson, formerly of Boscawen, NH, died peacefully at his home in Hillsville, VA on May 25, 2013. Born in Rochester NH, on April 28, 1920, the son of Elmer S. and Helen Cate Johnson, he graduated in 1942 from Keene State College, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served as a flight instructor and transport pilot, flying wounded from combat areas. Bob was employed at Evans Printing Company in Concord NH for 37 years, retiring as Vice President. He was a Founder and Past President of the NH Graphic Arts Association and Chair of the Governor's Committee on Printing. He was Selectman (1950-52) and Town Moderator (1955-1987) in Boscawen, chairman of the Boscawen Planning Board, a member of both the Penacook-Boscawen Water Precinct (1949-1950) and the first School Board for Merrimack Valley Regional School District. A lifelong musician, Bob played in college and for Nevers Band in Concord, and with his children and grandchildren at home. An amateur radio operator (W1ZFP) for 50 years, he was active in the NH American Radio Relay League. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Alice; 5 children, Robert L. Johnson Jr. (Lillian), Susan J. Fansmith (John), Eric S. Johnson, Sharon J. Confessore (Gary) and Jeffrey T. Johnson (Sharon), 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Sarah Huckins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 29 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Woodlawn VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Burial will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to a memorial at St. Joseph Parish, 99 Joy Ranch Rd, Woodlawn VA 24381. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
