Obituary

Richard Slate, 92, of Hillsville, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Forsyth Hospital. Richard was born in Coalwood, West Virginia January 1922 to the late James and Dovie Slate. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Townsend (Gary). Surviving family includes his wife of 72 years, Rachel; his son, Richard Slate, Jr. (Petra); and daughters, Robin Eckwerth (Scott), and Teresa Wells (Chris). He is also survived by six grandchildren, Lori Dropik, David Townsend, Chris Bond, Jason Bond, Jordan Wells, and Tyler Wells. Surviving great grandchildren include, Andrew Dropik, Samuel Thomson, Jacob Bond, Abi Dropik, Matthew Townsend, Aaron Townsend, and Wyate Bond. Richard was a decorated WWII combat veteran receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In addition to serving 35 years with the postal service, Richard was very involved in his local community. He was a member and Ruling Elder of the Dinwiddie Presbyterian Church and active in the Presbytery. Additionally, he served on the Carroll County Industrial Development Authority and was active in local Boy Scouts, Ruritan Club, and the Rural Mail Carriers Association. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the Fairview Presbyterian Church, Hillsville, Virginia. Visitation hours are 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM with Debbie Ginder officiating. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the dedicated caregivers who helped Richard so much. The efforts of Willow Dean Zschernig, Beth Thomas, Sara Cox, Susan Utt, Tonia Hall, Christine Quesenberry, Jordan Roscoe, and Ellen Sharp will always be remembered. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Back Pack Buddies at the church of your choice. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
