Rachel Slate, 94, of Hillsville, passed away Thursday January 24, 2019 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. Rachel was born in Carroll County, September 26, 1924 to the late Gabriel and Addie Quesenberry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Richard Slate Sr. and by her daughter, Janet Townsend (Gary).

Surviving family includes her son Richard Slate Jr. (Petra); and daughters, Robin Eckwerth (Scott) and Teresa Wells (Chris); six grandchildren, Lori Dropik, David Townsend, Chris Bond, Jason Bond, Jordan Wells and Tyler Wells; and 7 great-grandchildren, Andrew Dropik, Samuel Thompson, Jacob Bond, Abi Dropik, Matthew Townsend, Aaron Townsend and Wyate Bond.

Rachel was a lifelong Educator; she graduated from Radford University and taught at Sylvatus Elementary and Hillsville Elementary. She was a member of Dinwiddie Presbyterian Church and was involved in serving her local community. Additionally, she was active with the Sylvatus Ruritan Club, Rural Mail Carriers Auxiliary Association and Delta Kappa Gamma.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home. Visitation hours are 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Debbie Ginder and Martin Slate officiating.
