Peggy Cassell Slate

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, aunt, and friend, Peggy Cassell Slate.

She spent many years as the manager of Higher Ground Christian Retreat, a place that meant so much to her. It wasn’t just where she worked it was where she lived out her faith by loving and serving others.

She had a special place in her heart for people who were often overlooked, especially those recovering from addiction or struggling with mental illness. She never judged anyone for where they were in life and always worked to make people feel seen and loved.

Nothing brought her more joy than her family. She loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own and later their children too. She was the aunt who would do anything for them, and to many of them, she was a second mom.

In addition to her beloved nieces and nephews, Peggy was survived in death by her husband of over 50 years, Guydell Slate, her daughter Susan Slate, and his son and daughter-in-law David and Arianna Slate. She was also survived by her grandchildren Samuel and Evelyn Slate. Peggy also left behind her siblings Daryl Cassell, Gary Cassell, and Melanie and Dennis Puckett.

Peggy was preceded in death by her mother and father, Lester and Iola Cassell, her maternal grandparents, Roy and Belle Boyd and her paternal grandparents, Ellis and Icy Cassell

A celebration of life for Peggy is planned for Sunday, June 28 on what would’ve been her 51st wedding anniversary. Services will be held at Higher Ground Christian Retreat at 924 Renfro Ridge Rd., Hillsville VA 24343. The family will be there to welcome visitors at 3pm with the service beginning at 4pm. A covered dish will follow for anyone who wishes to bring a dish and a Peggy story to share afterward. Please wear colorful, casual clothes.
