Obituary

Nile C. Smythers, Hillsville, Virginia , died March 25, 2010.

Born in Carroll County on March 25, 1924, he was a son of the late Charlie M. Smythers and Hattie Alderman Smythers.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Faye Phillips Smythers; one son, Mike Smythers and his wife, Judy, of Lovingston, Virginia; one step-grandson, Chris Collins, his wife Patti, and two great grandchildren, Andrew & Catie Collins of Winchester; one brother, Charles Smythers and his wife, Shelby of Austinville; two sisters, Pearl Smith of Hillsville and Helen Reynolds and her husband R.J. Reynolds of Hillsville and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smythers was a retired teacher and administrator and served as Superintendent of Grayson County Schools and as a Supervisor with the Virginia Department of Education. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served his country during World War II and was a member of Grover King VFW Post 115 and the American Legion. He was a member of the Fries United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 27 at the Fries United Methodist Church with Rev. Lee Thomas, Rev. R.J. Reynolds and Rev. Charles G. Smythers officiating. Interment will follow at the Pickett Cemetery in the Laurel community of Carroll County. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral services.
