Nancy Carolyn Horton, 66, passed away at her home in the Hardscuffle Community of Carroll County, VA on April 26, 2015. Dedicated to the care of her siblings and parents, the late Tom and Nancy Mae Dickerson Horton, Carolyn is survived by her long time companion, Maynard Joyce, Hillsville, VA and siblings, Dr. Bobby Kenneth Horton, Hillsville, VA; Patricia Horton Taylor (Marvin), Allisonia, VA; Debra Horton, Mt. Airy, NC, and Sharon Horton Effler (Lee), Radford, VA. Three nieces, Ashleigh Horton Payne, Hillsville, VA; Jamie Taylor Seagle (Jeremiah), Riner, VA; Trista Taylor Trail (Kevin), Pulaski, VA, two great nieces, three great nephews, and special cousins, Sarah Liddle and Phyllis McGrady also survive. Retired from the Carroll County School System after 34 years as a high school health/P.E and driver's education teacher, Carolyn was also well known for her creative and nationally recognized prom themes. She embraced her retirement with the same passion she showed in her profession. An avid fan of country music, she planned her time around music concerts, beach trips and organizing the weekly Saturday gatherings for the family. Carolyn referred to the "Horton Family Gathering" with great delight, affection and anticipation. Beyond the devotion to her immediate family, she also extended her love and care to her Aunt Princess Jennings, along with countless other family and friends. She will be remembered for her humor, selflessness, compassion and dedication to the family and her many friends who are blessed to have had her in their life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Hillsville Christian Church. Friends and family will be received following the service in the church's McGrady Fellowship Hall, with a private burial to follow. The family wishes to thank Mountain Valley Hospice for their support. A special thank you to Laura Patton for her dedication and devotion to the Horton family.
