Obituary

Moir Glenwood Martin, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, with his wife of 63 years, Jeanette "Sunny" Martin by his side. He was 91 years old and a resident of Legacy Heights in Charlotte, NC. He was born on July 7, 1920 in Hillsville, VA to the late Wyatt Lester Martin and Stella Webb Martin. In addition to his wife, Dr. Martin is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Donna and Tom Pope of Lexington, VA; Paige and Randolph Marshall of Fayetteville, NC; and Kim and Brian Heath of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by his sister Oleta Martin Webb and his brother W.L. Martin, Jr. "Moe," as he was known to his friends, was a highly respected family physician in Hillsville, VA for 49 years. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII in North Africa. After the war, he graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and opened his practice over the old Nuckolls Drugstore in Hillsville. An avid Virginia Tech football fan, Dr. Martin also enjoyed gardening, tinkering, and feeding his birds and squirrels. A funeral service to be conducted by Dr. Martin's grandson-in-law, Tim Meyers, is scheduled for 11am, Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville. The family will receive friends following the service from 11:30 - 1:30. There will be a private burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made to VFW Post 1115 P.O. Box 1952, Hillsville, VA 24343 or The Carroll County Historical Society P.O. Box 937, Hillsville, VA 24343 or a charity of one's choice. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
