Mildred Perkins Tompkins, 107, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2023, at The Glebe Retirement Community (Daleville, VA) where she had resided for twelve years. She was born in Galax, Virginia in 1916 to Edward Franklin Perkins and Zolly Mae Bryant Perkins. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James Lucas Tompkins of Hillsville, VA; sister Jean Coots of Roanoke, VA; brother Edward Perkins of Richmond, VA; and nephew Edward Perkins of Christiansburg, VA.
She is survived by two children, James L. Tompkins III & wife Meredith (Floyd, VA) and Rosamond & husband John Foote (Manassas, VA); four grandsons, James L Tompkins IV & wife Sherry (Hillsville, VA), John Daniel Tompkins & wife Brie (Topanga, California), Nathaniel Foote and partner Amy (Harrisburg, PA), and Samuel Foote and wife Fernanda (San Diego, CA); and four great grandchildren, James Lucas V (19 yo), William Bryant (16 yo), Lily Rose (12 yo) and Samuel Lucas (9 yo).
Known as Millie, she grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, but spent summers at her father's childhood home in Ashe County, NC. In 1940, after graduating from Roanoke College, Millie moved to Hillsville, VA. She taught at Woodlawn High School before marrying James L. Tompkins in 1941. They were members of Hillsville Presbyterian Church, where Millie played the organ for 45 years, beginning around 1950.
In 2012, she moved to The Glebe Retirement Community, where she spent the remaining years of her life alongside her beloved sister Jean Coots until Jean's death in 2020.
Services for Millie will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 11:00 am at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, 172 South Main Street, Hillsville, VA 24343. Burial will follow in the Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church; either are appreciated. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
