Mary Elsie Tenpenny Richardson passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Waddell Nursing and Rehab Center, in Galax. She was born in Bolton, England on June 18, 1922 to the late Elise and Thomas Tenpenny.
She was a World War II bride and came to the U.S.A. in April, 1947. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Raymond Richardson; sister and brother in-law, Margaret and Ronald Boulton.
She is survived by her daughter & caregiver, Oneda Hutchins of Hillsville; son and daughter in-law, Stuart and Sue Richardson of Richmond; three grandchildren and spouses, Capt. Brandon & Verina Richardson of Alexandria, India Richardson of Richmond, and Capt. Patrick and Jamie Richardson of Oceanside, CA; two great grandchildren, Lillie and Alex Richardson; brother and sister in-law, Thomas and Kathleen Tenpenny of Hillsville; five special sister in-laws, Oneda Christley of Hillsville, Colleene R. White of Roanoke, Maxine Allison of Hampton, Berta Jennings of Hillsville, and Mary Richardson of Winchester, also Freida and Vernon White of Hillsville, and Gertrude Akers of Pulaski; two special daughters Margaret Ann Alderman and Margie Quesenberry both of Hillsville. Many nieces, nephews, and church friends also survive.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Clark, Dr. Lastinger, and Regina Jones, to all the staff of Waddell Nursing and Rehab Center second floor in Galax, and to the church family at Sylvatus Christian Church for their support.
The family will hold a graveside service at Liberty Hill Cemetery on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 11:00 AM with Pastor David Bays officiating with burial to follow. The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 14, 2011. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to the charity of your choice. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
