Mary Elizabeth Bennett Guynn of Hillsville, Virginia, passed away Saturday, July 26th. She was born and raised in High Point, North Carolina, the daughter of Tazwell Beyers and Elizabeth Loretta Winecoff Bennett. She was the widow of J. Carlin Guynn. They were married in October, 1948. She was predeceased by one brother, Bill Bennett, and one sister, Virginia Bennett Armsworthy. She graduated from High Point High School and attended High Point University. Until her retirement, Mrs. Guynn was associated with her husband in business, first with Guynn Department Store and later with Guynn Hardware and Furniture Company. She treasured her contacts and friendships with the people of Carroll County. When she married Carlin Guynn and moved to Hillsville, she entered into the life here with enthusiasm. A great proponent of the best education possible for our children, she worked with the PTAs and other committees for the advancement of education in Carroll County. She served on the Carroll County School Board for a number of years. She was a long time Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. Mrs. Guynn started the United Way in Hillsville and actively worked for it, serving on the board for a number of years.She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Hillsville where she served on many committees and as a member of the board. She was also a long standing member of the United Methodist Women where she held many offices, including serving as president for three terms. She also worked as Treasurer for the Wytheville District UMW for several years. She was a former Sunday School teacher and amember of the Upper Room Class.
Mrs. Guynn is survived by one beloved daughter, Beth, of the home, three cousins, John T. Bennett III, Duane Best, and Sam Best, one nephew, Gary Guynn, and two nieces, Jeanne Guynn Lewis and Ann Guynn Gillis. Also surviving is a foster child, Marina Arispe Meneces of La Pas, Bolivia. The family will receive friends Monday the 28th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vaughn Guynn McGrady Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday July 29, at 11:00 A.M.. Flowers will be appreciated but memorials may be directed to Hillsville United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 356, Hillsville, Virginia, 24343 or to the Carroll County Wellness Center P.O. Box 1266 Hillsville, Va. 24343.
