Mary B. Clements Sumner of Hillsville, VA was called home to the Lord on Sunday February 24, 2008 after recent by-pass surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Sumner was born July 31, 1925 in Bedford County, VA to Nowlin D. and Mamie L. Clements. She is preceded in death by her husband the Reverend Otto Sumner, and a second husband Ralph Vaughn. She is also preceded in death by her parents, a sister Lucille Zrubek, and a brother Shannon Clements.
Mrs. Sumner is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Judy and Dwain Leonard of Roanoke, a daughter Carolyn Worrell of Hillsville, and a son and daughter-in-law Curtis and Sandra Sumner of Herndon. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Alan Leonard and wife Kim, Curtis Sumner, Jr. and wife Robin, Rhonda Shay and husband David, Allen Worrell and wife Crystal, and Stacy Sumner, as well as eight great-grandchildren; Johnathan Miller, Sara Sumner, Sam Sumner, Laura Leonard, Jack Leonard, Gabriel Shay, Jordan Worrell, and Mary-Grace Shay. Also surviving are sisters Margaret Creasy, Juanita Turnbull, and Doris Turnbull and husband Duvall, along with three loving sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
Mary Sumner also leaves behind a loving family at Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church at Pipers Gap. She served Blue Ridge Chapel and the New River Baptist Association for over 50 years as Sunday School teacher, pianist/organist, ministers wife, and mother-figure to countless numbers. Her indelible spirit, unwavering faith in God, and infectious good humor made her an icon among her family and community.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with Rev. David Moore officiating. Mrs. Sumner will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in Monta Vista Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
