Mallie Ella Jennings Shockley, 95, of Hillsville, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Trinity Mission of Hillsville. Mrs. Shockley was born in Carroll County to the late Guy Kenneth and Thursa Ann Dalton Jennings. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lawrence Shockley; sister, Alice Edna Dozier; and brother, William Robert Jennings. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Leo and Carolyn Shockley of Floyd; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bruce Sackett of Woodbridge; grandchildren and spouses, Jody and Brenda Shockley, Kevin Shockley, April and Shane Honey, Angela and Eric Watkins, Amanda and Joseph Price, and Andria and Michael Lightfoot; great grandchildren, Brandon Walker, Mason Honey, Preston Honey, Ella Price, Braedon Honey, Ava Price, Dustin Lightfoot, Lea Price, Jackson Lightfoot, Dallin Watkins, Victor Price, and Addison Watkins. Mallie graduated from Marshall High School on May 28, 1937 as Valedictorian of her senior class and later graduated from Bluefield Business College. After graduation she worked as a secretary for Dr. Porter in Hillsville. Mallie also held secretarial positions in Galax and then the Radford Arsenal. During WWII she moved to Portland Oregon where she was secretary for Kaiser Shipbuilding. When Mallie found out she could make more money as a welder and crane operator, she switched occupations. She also served in the US Coast Guard Reserve for two years as a secretary working two nights and on Saturdays. After the war, Mallie married Howard Lawrence Shockley on December 18, 1946 in Hillsville. They bought a farm, where they milked cows and Howard also worked at Radford Arsenal. During that time, Leo and Linda were born. When Leo started college Mallie worked at Sprague Electric 2nd and 3rd shifts. She enjoyed baking cakes and making afghans. Throughout, the years she also crocheted thousands of footies. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2013 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, from 10:00 until 11:00 AM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Monta Vista Memory Gardens in Galax. To honor Mallie's wishes, the family asks that no flowers be sent and instead, donations be made in her memory to Joy Ranch Home for Children, P.O. Box 727 Hillsville, VA 24343. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
