Obituary

Lura Imogene Webb Burcham, 89, died on May 19 at Autumncare in Mocksville, N.C. She was a lifelong resident of Hillsville, including two years at Wheatland Retirement Community, until 2005, when she moved to the Memory Enrichment Center at Trinity Elms in Clemmons, NC, near her family. Mrs. Burcham was born July 8, 1923, in Carroll County to George Madison and Lura Cruise Webb, the first of their three children. She was educated in the Carroll County schools, and taught at the Vinson School briefly after World War II. On August 6, 1949, she married William Gordon Burcham, who died in 2003. She was retired from Sprague Electric Company in Hillsville. Like her parents, she was a member of the Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church. She devoted her life to caring for family, and she was a constant companion to her parents until their deaths. A wonderful cook and homemaker, Jean enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends, and she was a fastidious housekeeper. Her garden was another source of happiness, and she and Will maintained a large garden as long as their health allowed. Jean was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 1115 in Hillsville, a responsibility that she took seriously and with her customary energy. She was a devoted wife and daughter, a loving sister, a wonderful aunt, and a faithful friend. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by an infant brother; a sister, Arlee Webb Combs; and a brother-in-law William Revis Combs. She is survived by her niece, Sandra Combs Boyette and husband Dr. Gray Boyette, of Winston-Salem; her nephew, Benny Revis Combs and wife Linda Sharpe Combs, of Rural Hall, NC; her great-niece, Emily Revis Combs, of Carrboro, N.C.; and her great nephew, Benjamin Andrew Combs of Rural Hall. She is also survived by several cousins, including Mary Frances Cruise Gardner and Geneva Burcham Edwards of Hillsville; and a number of nieces and nephews in the Burcham family of whom she was fond. The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville from noon to 1:30 pm on Saturday, May 25. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm at Gladesboro Lutheran Church cemetery with the Reverend Joseph Shumate officiating. The family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Trinity Elms, 3750 Harper Road, Clemmons, NC, 27012; or to Gladesboro Lutheran Church, 3486 Gladesboro Road, Hillsville, 24343. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
