Linda Sue
Surratt
October 8, 1957 – May 30, 2026
Linda Sue McDonald Surratt, age 68, of Hillsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2026 surrounded by her family.
Linda was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to the late Elizabeth Lucille McDonald Thompson and Eldon Roland McDonald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jeffrey Lynn McDonald.
She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Foy Johnny Surratt; her son, Jonathon Surratt; her daughter, Ashley Hill and husband Daniel; and her beloved grandsons, Dylan and Carson Hill. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas McDonald; her sister, Donna Gunsaulis; several nieces and nephews; and her very special four-legged companion, Tina.
Linda lived a life marked by compassion, care, and service to others. For nearly 30 years, she was the owner and operator of a small assisted living facility, where she found great purpose and joy in helping others during their time of need. Her work was more than a job; it was a calling. She took immense pride in caring for her residents and treated those entrusted to her care like members of her own family.
Linda’s greatest joy was her family. In retirement, she spent much of her time checking in on and helping family and friends, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her love was shown in the small, everyday moments: the daily phone calls to ask how the day had gone, the advice and encouragement she freely offered, and the meals she prepared with care. Her cooking was one of the many ways she cared for the people she loved.
She took special pride in being “Grandma” to Dylan and Carson, and she treasured the time she spent watching them grow. She also had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh, often getting others laughing right along with her. Whether sharing a joke, teasing those she loved, or simply enjoying time together, Linda had a way of making everyday moments feel lighter and more joyful.
Linda enjoyed simple pleasures, including playing cards, working puzzles, watching her favorite shows, decorating for the holidays, and spending time with Tina, whom she loved dearly. She especially loved fall weather and the changing leaves, finding joy in the season’s beauty and comfort. Her family cherished her deeply and, in later years, cared for her with the same love and devotion she had shown to so many throughout her life. The warmth, generosity, humor, and quiet strength that defined Linda’s life will continue to be felt by all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
In keeping with Linda’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, she requested a celebration of life with close family and friends. The family is planning a gathering for this fall, Linda’s favorite time of year, to share memories, stories, and laughter in the way she would have wanted.
The family would like to thank Carilion Clinic Hospice for their wonderful support.
