Lester Lee "Howard" Surratt, Jr., 86, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart, Virginia. He was born in Sylvatus, Virginia on March 29, 1927 to the late Lester Lee Surratt, Sr. and the late Minnie Stillwell Surratt. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clinton Surratt and sisters, Lucille Surratt and Minnie Spangler. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He started his insurance company, Southwestern Associates of Blacksburg, Inc., in 1960 in Blacksburg, Virginia. He moved this business to Bassett in 1980. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and visiting the family farm. He is survived by the love of his life for 30 years, Nancy C. Surratt of Blacksburg, two sons, Roger Wayne Surratt, Sr. of Sylvatus, Virginia and Anthony Ray Surratt of Bassett, three daughters, Patricia S. Ross of Bassett, Lisa S. Elliott of Blacksburg and Melanie S. Carroll of Bassett, fourteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandson, two brothers, Carl Surratt of Hillsville, Virginia and Elbert Surratt of Sylvatus, Virginia, and four sisters, Pauline Horton of Carroll County, Virginia, Wilma Gardner of Mt. Airy, North Carolina, Betty Lou Atkins of Carroll County, Virginia and Janet Horton of Carroll County, Virginia. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 7, 2013 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel and on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Virginia. The funeral will be conducted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Elder Ronnie Bowman and Elder Dwight Sechrist officiating. Burial will follow in the Surratt Family Cemetery in Hillsville, Virginia. Military Rites will be conducted by the Hillsville V.F.W. Post 1115. The family would like to thank Team Nurse in Stuart, nurses and staff of Blue Ridge Nursing Home and Dr. Cole for their kindness and care given to Lester. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
