Obituary

On Friday, September 25, 2020, Les went to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior.  He joined his sons, Ron & Kevin Puckett; parents, Ocie & Roosevelt Puckett; sister and brother-in-law, Reva and Foy Hawks; sister and brother-in-law, Iva Lee & J.B. Walston; and niece, Pat Walston.

He leaves behind, to cherish his memory, the love his life and wife of 52 years, Becky; his granddaughter Abbey, nieces (who were like his daughters) Brenda, Judy, Neda, Janet, and Bobbi; his great-nieces and great-nephews Jacki, Julia, Rachel Leigh, Josh, Katie, Hayden, Hannah, Lindsay, and Brooke; and his faithful companions, his dogs Rufus, Raven and Baxter "The Big B."

Les worked most of his life at Newport News Shipyard in Dept 038.  After leaving the shipyard, he drove trucks for and eventually retired from U.S. Food Service.  Along the way, Les also worked security for Hampton Coliseum and played Santa at times.

He had so many interests and hobbies, but his greatest love was music. He loved going to bluegrass festivals, playing his guitar, and singing and writing songs that will stay in our hearts forever.  He played every Friday night at the Willis Gap Jam Sessions and monthly for the residents at Laurel Meadows.  He also loved the years he coached his son in baseball.  He "played at" golf.  And, he loved being a part of the annual play about the Carroll County Courthouse Shootout of 1912, always in the role of his grandfather, who was amongst the jurors at the original trial.

Les lived his early years in Laurel Fork, attending school at Rome Elementary.  Then, at the age of 16, he and his family moved to Newport News, where he graduated proudly from Newport News High School.  And, in subsequent years, he always loved attending the class reunions.  After his retirement in 2008, he returned to his beloved mountains where he spent time with his relatives and friends, old and new.  The family wishes to thank them all for the love and support they provided to him over the last few months.  He loved everyone and never took a single relationship for granted.  Les had traveled to many countries and 49 of the 50 states of America, and he always said Virginia was the most beautiful.  We are sure that was mostly because of all the love he was shown by all he knew.

When you think of him, remember his big smile, the twinkle in his eyes and that hint of mischief in his laugh.  We all feel blessed to have been a part of his life.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time but will be shared on the Puckett website at https://blueridgemountainpucketts.shutterfly.com when finalized.
