Leonard Branscome, age 81, of Hillsville, Virginia, passed away on August 31, 2026, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born July 20, 1945, Leonard was the son of the late Robert L. Branscome and Pearlie Mae Dalton Branscome.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred “Mickey” Branscome Sayers; and niece Sandra Sayers Stanberry.

Known simply as “Papa Frog” to his family and many who knew him, Leonard was a hardworking man who spent much of his life as a logger. He believed in working hard, providing for his family, and taking care of the people he loved. A man of few words, Leonard wasn’t one to say a whole lot or sugarcoat much of anything. He was tough, strong-willed, and you rarely had to wonder where you stood with him.

Leonard was dependable and a fighter throughout his life. Those who knew him will remember his unmistakable personality, determination, and the way he remained unapologetically himself. Those who knew him best wouldn’t have expected him to be any other way.

Above all, he will be remembered as Papa Frog—a name that became as much a part of who he was as the man himself.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Susan Huff and Stephanie Frazier (Barry); the mother of his children, Betty Branscome; his grandchildren, Amanda Huff, Michaela Smith (Samantha A.), McKenzie Sharp Hash (Devin), Jace Frazier, and Chloe Frazier; his great-grandson, Gunnar Smith; a special member of the family, Tommy Sharp; his nephew, Eddie Sayers (Tammy); and his niece, Sherry Casteele (Jim).

Also surviving is Diane Edwards. Leonard also leaves behind his faithful four-legged companions, who were never far from his side.

The family will receive friends Friday, September 4 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 PM with Pastor, Tony Hodge and Eddie Sayers officiating. A private burial will be held by the family at a later date.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Paul LaFlam, the staff of Fresenius Dialysis Center, Medi Home Health & Hospice, Twin County Regional Hospital Emergency Department, and Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Leonard and his family.

Leonard’s life was one defined by hard work, strength, and perseverance. The lessons he leaves behind, and the memories made throughout his 81 years, will continue to live on in those who knew and loved him.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered as Papa Frog.
