Lena Ruth White Dalton, 93 of Varina, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Lena was born in Carroll County, Virginia to the late Ross and Ruth White. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil J. Dalton; sister, Louetta Young; brothers, Sylvan, Marvin and Thornton White; and granddaughter, Dawn Evans.
She is survived by her six children; David Dalton (Valerie), Joanne Monday (Roby), Jerry Dalton, Kathy Fadely (Marcos); Jennifer Dalton (David) and Melani Robertson (Jason). Lena leaves behind a remarkable legacy through her 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory always.
Lena inspired her family and friends with her quiet resolve during her battle with colon cancer. Her family rejoiced in celebrating her being cancer free for the last 14 years. Even while enduring the effects of dementia for the last several years of her life, Lena was surrounded with reminders of the family she loved so dearly and the many people who loved her in return.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures; caring for plants and flowers, watching wildlife (especially birds), and bringing smiles to every baby she met. Lena’s home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the comfort of her cooking. Her fried chicken with gravy and biscuits was the birthday meal most requested by her children, and her famous chocolate pies were a treasured tradition at every holiday and special occasion.
Lena will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, her generous heart, and the warmth she shared with everyone who knew her. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched.
The family extends special thanks to her caregivers, especially LaTonda Yancey. Her kindness and caring for our Mom enriched her life and brought comfort to us knowing she was there with her.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The family will receive friends and family for visitation at 10 AM on Saturday, May 16, 2026 followed by a funeral service at 11 AM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral home in Hillsville, VA. Interment at the White Cemetery, 1396 Whitetown Road in Hillsville, VA
