Laura Mae was a faithful member of Fairview Presbyterian Church for over 6 decades. She was an avid gardener and possessed a youthful energy that inspired everyone around her. She had a love and passion for flowers, friends, and family, and her heart was filled with generosity. Sewing and quilting were just a couple of her many talents that she worked at with persistence and resilience. Growing up during the difficult times of The Depression, she learned and demonstrated the beauty of a simple life. Her resourcefulness knew no bounds, and she gave everything a purpose. Despite the difficulties of her childhood, Laura Mae radiated a playful spirit and loved to dance, joke, and entertain her family with her antics. She regularly displayed her strong work ethic through her annual yard sales and diligent garden work that continued until her final day. A woman worthy of admiration and honor, Laura Mae consistently loved her family and taught them the value of hard work and living simply.
She was actively involved with and loved her Senior Citizens meetings that she attended at the Carroll County Senior Citizen Building. She treasured the Thursday meetings with her Sylvatus Senior Group and her shopping trips with everyone. Throughout the years, she bonded with so many and truly loved these people who became her dear friends. She was always dancing, playing bingo, and at times, even played the role of the auctioneer. In addition, she loved her work at SPRAGUE Electric in Hillsville and created lifetime friendships. She also enjoyed working in the cafeteria in the public school system. In her later years, she looked forward to volunteering her time at the Golden Harvest Thrift Store.
One of Laura Mae's proudest accomplishments was the legacy of her children. Her energetic spirit left a special place in each of their hearts. She cultivated their aspirations while teaching them the value of love, laughter, and family. In helping them grow to be strong men and women of Christ, she instilled in them the belief that they can persevere through whatever they may face.
The celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, March 15th, 2018 at Fairview Presbyterian Church in Hillsville at 3:00PM with Pastor Debbie Ginder officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardner Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 1:00PM until 3:00PM prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Fairview Presbyterian Church with Haiti Missions on the memo line. This may be mailed to 15 Fairview Lane Hillsville, Va 24343. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
