Obituary

Lanzy Robinson Mabe, 94, of Hillsville, VA, died on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at his home on Coulson Church Road. He was born October 31, 1914 in Carroll County, Virginia, to James Madison and Rachel Lineberry Mabe. It was in 1942 in York, South Carolina that he married Alma Mae Newman. She preceded him in death November 24, 2000. Also preceding him are brothers Harry, Silas, and James and sisters Helen Howlett and Hulda Howlett.

Mr. Mabe is survived by his children, Robert Eugene Mabe and his wife Joyce of Austinville, VA, Janie Lee Mabe of Alexandria, VA, Betty Mae Mabe and her husband Burton of Hillsville, VA and Marcella Ann Poling and her husband Harry of Winchester, VA.

He is also survived by grandchildren Daniel Robert Mabe, Richard Jerry Mabe, Mark Edward Poling and John Robert Poling. Great grandchildren are Jasmine Schaeffer and Connor Mabe.

Sister-in-law Bertha Mabe survives as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mabe was a member of Coulson Church of the Brethren where he served as a deacon, The Gideons International and Hillsville VFW Post 1115. He worked 35 years for Appalachian Power Company as a meter reader. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a 1st Class Gunners Mate with the Navy in the Pacific Ocean.

The family wishes to recognize the kindness and gentle care of the folks who made it possible for him to live his last months at home: Ruth Newman, Glenda Robinson, Sue Smith, Candy Street, Sherri Horton and employees of Twin County Hospice.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Coulson Church of the Brethren with Pastor Russell Payne, Pastor John Canning, Mr. David Hylton and Mr. Kendall Clay officiating. Burial will follow in the Mabe Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Hillsville V.F.W. Post 1115. The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Twin County Hospice, P.O. Box 106 Galax, VA 24333.
