Obituary

Stout, Kenneth Deane, recently of Hillsville, VA died at his home April 6, 2006. He was born February 20, 1916, and was a resident of Knoxville, TN almost his entire life. He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Velma Dynes Stout. Dr. Stout graduated from Knoxville High School in 1934, and received three degrees from the University of Tennessee, including an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and an Ed.D in education. He was a world traveler, pilot, engineer and educator, serving as the Knoxville City Schools first Supervisor of Science from 1963 until 1984 after teaching physics and chemistry at Stair Tech and Fulton High Schools for twenty years. Many former students will remember Dr. Stout as the man with the walking cane who entertained them with bird calls and magic tricks. A near fatal plane wreck in 1943, when he was a flight instructor for the US Army, changed the direction of his life from pilot and engineer to educator. He was the recipient of two Fulbright scholarships which enabled him to teach in London, England and Uganda for several years. Dr. Stout participated in many mission trips around the world for the United Methodist Church, of which he was a lifelong member. Dr. Stout had a remarkable talent for fixing and repairing anything broken, such as an incubator in a Kenyan hospital or an X-ray machine in a clinic in the Central America, and used his talent to glorify God. In his life he traveled to or worked in over 80 countries. In 1982 he married Lois Quesenberry of Hillsville, VA and had a happy second marriage. After his retirement, they devoted their time to travel and more mission trips. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lois Stout, children Sylvia S. Core (Bob) of Knoxville, TN, Stephen O. Stout (Marlene) of Charlotte, NC, and Stewart R. Stout (Jenny) of McMinnville, OR, grandchildren Jennifer Core of Nashville, TN, Andrew Core of Tucson, AZ, Patrick Core of Knoxville, TN, Deirdre Mumpower of Denver, NC, Danielle Renstrom of Raleigh, NC, Lydia Poole of Beaver, WV, Rebecca and Nicholas Stout of McMinnville, OR and great grandsons Elliott and Wyatt Core of Tucson and Brock Mumpower of Denver.
