Obituary

Kenneth E. Smith, age 92 of Fancy Gap, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday February 28, 2018 due to complications of a hip fracture, at Grayson Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Independence Virginia.

Born on May 12, 1925 in Saugerties, New York, he was pre-deceased by his parents Grace Sanford Smith and Robert Burns Smith, and his brother Wesley S. Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Ruth Swart Smith, son William R. Smith, daughter-in-law Susan Steelman, daughters Barbara Ann Rice and Donna Marie Smith, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Ken graduated from Saugerties High School in 1943 and served in Maritime Service (Merchant Marine) during WWII. He graduated from Michigan State College (now University) in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He married Helen Ruth Swart on October 12, 1953.

Upon graduation from college, Ken went to work for the New York State Department of Transportation and worked for 29 years as a Civil Engineer until 1979, taking one year off to run a private business known as Ken-Rent Inc. After retiring from NYSDOT, Ken worked for private consultants on highway construction and airport projects from 1980 - 1994. Ken and Helen moved to Fancy Gap, Virginia in 2005 where Ken enjoyed the mountains similar to his hometown area and the many wonderful people he became friends with, making many visits back north to see family and friends there too.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM prior to the service.  Burial will follow later in Mt. Marion Cemetery in New York.

Vaughan-Glynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family in Hillsville, Virginia. Seamon-Wisley Funeral Home is serving the family in Saugerties, New York.
