Mrs. Kathleen Sowers Melton, 96, of Hillsville, VA, passed away Friday, December 26, 2025 at Heritage Hall Laurel Meadows of Laurel Fork, VA. Mrs. Melton was born in Coalwood, WV to the late Rev. Walter Christa Sowers and Velma Martin Sowers.

She lived in Carroll County and retired from her teaching career in the Carroll County School System. In retirement, she was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, shopping and gardening.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Chester Earl Melton; a brother, Alva Loy Sowers; her son-in-law, Steven Hunter. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kathi M. Hunter of Spring Grove, VA; sister, Bonnie S. Kimble of Hillsville, VA; two grandchildren and their spouses, Evan Hunter (Julie) of Lexington, NC and Eric Hunter (Liz) of Chesterfield, VA.; six great grandchildren, Ryan, Ethan, Charlotte, Cole, Megan and Sarah Hunter; several nieces and nephews; special friends Joann Iroler, Katie Adams and Carol Harrell.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel located at 1035 North Main Street, Hillsville, VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 10:00 AM prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the Heritage Hall - Resident Aid Fund, 16600 Danville Pike, Laurel Fork, VA 24352-3804. This fund is used to provide memory making experiences and activities for the residents, both in and out of the facility.

The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Hall Laurel Meadows and MEDI Home Health & Hospice for their excellent care, help and support during this time.
