Joyce Martin Slate, 66, of Hillsville, Virginia died Sunday, June 30, 2013 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She was born November, 1946 to Philip Owen and Eula N. Martin. Joyce is survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard P. Slate, Jr. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also survived by her brother, Bobby Martin and wife Syndie; nephew, Robert Martin; and special friends, Inkie, Millie, and Little One. She was a dedicated teacher for 43 years and will be missed by family, friends, colleagues, and current and former students. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Rev. Wendell Horton officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. A private graveside service will follow for family only at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Twin County Humane Society, P.O. Box 125, Hillsville, VA 24343. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
