John Alderman, 99, a retired Hillsville attorney, died on Thursday, August 9, 2007. Born and reared in the Fremont community of Carroll County, he was the son of the late George Washington Alderman and Nancy Martin Alderman. He was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Elizabeth Perry Alderman, and his son, Atty. John Perry Alderman, who had served as United States Attorney for Western Virginia and as Commonwealth's Attorney for Carroll County. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters. He is survived by a son, Dr. Taylor Alderman and his wife Pamela of Roanoke; a daughter-in-law, Marion Alderman of Hillsville; two sisters, Mrs. Vera Webb and Miss Hannah Alderman, both of Hillsville; two grandchildren and their spouses, Atty. John Alderman and Mary of Minneapolis and Nancy McDaniel and Russell of Roanoke; four great-grandchildren, Conan and Eli McDaniel of Roanoke and Hannah and Vivian Alderman of Minneapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Except for absences for education, military service, and health care, Mr. Alderman was a lifelong resident of Carroll County. He graduated from Hillsville High School and Cumberland University law school in Tennessee. He was a member of the Carroll County Bar from 1929 until his retirement in 1991, and was elected Commonwealth's Attorney in 1931, 1939, and 1959. He was active for many years in the Republican Party and in the Hillsville Presbyterian Church. He served in the Navy, and briefly in the Marine Corps, during World War II, and was an honorary member of the Grover King Post of the VFW. Mr. Alderman was widely known as an authority on the history of Carroll County and the genealogies of the early families of the County. Calling hours will be Sunday at 1:00 pm at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville, with memorial services following at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in Wilkinson Cemetery in Hillsville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Carroll County Historical Society, P.O. Box 937, Hillsville, VA 24343, or to the Hillsville Presbyterian Church.
