Jeanette Wright
Dalton
September 22, 1940 – December 14, 2024
Jeanette Wright Dalton passed away peacefully at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Jeanette was born in Pennsylvania on September 22, 1940 to Tony and Treva Wright, but grew up and lived her life in Hillsville VA. She married Waverly Payne Dalton on September 25, 1960 and they had two sons, Stephen Payne Dalton and Mitchell Todd Dalton.
Jeanette led an active and productive life in her 84 years. She was the first woman elected to public office in Carroll County, Virginia when she served on the Board of Supervisors as the Pine Creek Supervisor from 1980-1983 and served as Chairman in 1981.
During her lifetime, she also served her community in many capacities. She was a life member and past president of the Auxiliary of the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, served on the Public Service Authority (PSA) board representing Pine Creek District for 11 years, served as site manager for the Carroll County Senior Center for 14 years, was a member of the District Three Governmental Cooperative Board of Commissioners representing Carroll County 1980-1983 (served as Chairman in 82-83), served as Co-Chairman of Carroll County Red Cross Bloodmobile program for several years, served as an Election Official for Carroll County for many years, and she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hillsville, VA.
Something that brought her great pleasure and that she dedicated much of her time to was the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Hillsville Chapter 71 of the OES for 55 years. In that time, she served as Worthy Matron three times, was a Grand Representative of Manitoba, Canada in Virginia (1993-1995), served as Grand Martha of the Grand Chapter of Virginia in 2012-2013, was Assistant Lecturer of District 38 for 13 years, served as Personal Page for several years, and served as an officer in her chapter for several years, most notably as secretary for over 20 years. She faithfully attended the Grand Chapter of Virginia every year from 1972-2022.
Jeanette loved to travel and took dance classes with her late husband, Waverly. Together, they had visited 48 contiguous states and parts of Canada. She was loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
