Janet C. Brown, 95, of Hillsville, Virginia passed on and began her new life with the Lord on July 7, 2008. She was born June 17, 1913 in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania.
The mother of 9 children; grandmother of 27; great-grandmother of 31; and great, great grandmother of 10, Janet was an active volunteer throughout her life in numerous programs that served the needs of many. In 2000, she moved to Hillsville, Virginia and was a communicant at St. Joseph Church in Woodlawn and prior to that she was a communicant at St. Catherines Church in Leeds, Massachusetts for 27 years. At St. Catherines, Janet served as president of the Womens Council, was a Parish Council Member, Sunday School Teacher, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and a member of the Altar Society and Choir. She was a recipient of the Pius Xth award for service to religious education at St. Catherines Church. Janet was also involved in the Diocesan Deanery. She served as a food coordinator to Jessies House Homeless Shelter in Northampton, Massachusetts. Janet served as a Decisional Training Volunteer at the Hampshire County Regional Jail for over 25 years. She resumed her volunteer work at the Bland County Correctional Center, when she moved to Hillsville, Virginia. Janet was a member of the Carroll County Senior Center in Woodlawn.
Janet loved to visit with family and friends, cook, read, watch the news and sew on her mothers Singer pedal sewing machine. She was a faithful correspondent, frequently writing to her family and friends and published a family newsletter, on her home computer, since March 2001, News From Mother Brown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rosalie Dzwileski; her husband of 57 years, John J. Brown; son, James F. Brown; daughter, Noreen Bellino; Grandsons, Steven T. Donahue and John J. Brown, III.
She is survived by her brother, Irven Dzwileski of Hillsville, Virginia; sons & daughters-in-law: John J. & Lorraine Brown of Exeter, NH; Thomas J. Brown of Scranton, PA; Martha Ann Brown, wife of James of Jackson, NJ; Irven Donald and Jean Brown of South River, NJ; Daughters and sons-in-law Alice and George Saunders, North Bridgton, ME; Cathy H. Brown, Amesbury, MA; Janett and Steve Gilman, Hillsboro, NH and Mary Ann and Bill Cox of Hillsville, VA; and her 66 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Woodlawn, VA at 11:00 AM with Father Charles Brickner officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM
