Jane Yvonne Dykhuizen Carpenter passed peacefully on Sunday June 2, 2013 at the age of 83. Jane was born and raised in New Orleans, LA and had lived in Richmond, VA, Hillsville, VA and Quito, Ecuador. Jane was a home maker, a teacher and a missionary. She taught elementary school at Patrick Henry Elementary in Richmond, VA. She also taught ESL to migrant workers in Hillsville, VA. Jane loved the Presbyterian Church. Her husband, Jim, pastored All Souls Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA from the early 1960s until 1973 when they became missionaries in Ecuador. In addition to teaching Sunday school, and singing in the choir, she served as an Elder at The Hillsville Presbyterian Church and the Indian Valley and Buffalo Mountain churches in Southwest Virginia. A former Biology Major, Jane loved all living things and extended her kind spirit to all people, animals and plants without hesitation or reservation. Jane was pre-deceased by her parents Fred Dykhuizen and Mary Zachary Dykhuizen, her husband, Rev. James G. Carpenter, her daughter Sharon K. Carpenter and her brothers, Dr. Robert F. Dykhuizen, Sidney E. Dykhuizen and Lloyd E. Ducote. Jane is survived by her sons J. Mark Carpenter (Alice), James Scott Carpenter, daughter Mary E. Carpenter, grandchildren Jonathan Scott Carpenter, Virginia Jane Carpenter, Emily Kathryn Carpenter, her brother Fred Dykhuizen (Ronwyn), her sister Joy Dykhuizen Bagur (Jacque) and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and friends near and afar. Jane is also survived by her very special friend Margaret Bremner Cobb whom she loved like a daughter. Finally, Jane is survived by her precious toy poodle, Cherie. A memorial service will be held at The Hillsville Presbyterian Church at 10:00 am on Friday, June 14, 2013 in Hillsville, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local animal shelter and/or the SPCA. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the Carpenter family.
