James Edwin Vass, Sr., 86, of Hillsville, VA passed away on October 26, 2008 in Galax, VA. He was the son of I. G. Vass, the city manger of Waynesboro for over 30 years. Mr. Vass graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1939 and from Fishbourne Military Academy in 1940. Mr. Vass was preceded in death by his parents, I. G. & Alice Matthews Vass and brother Eldon Matthews Vass. He is survived by his wife, Helen Swink Vass of the home; daughter, Judith Danielian Holland of Rockville, MD; son James Edwin Vass, Jr. of Port O Connor, TX; grandchildren David Danielian Holland, Janice E. Bauder, Catherine E. Holland, Robert J. J. Holland, Jr.; and a very special pet named King.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 1:00 PM at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Hillsville #193 AF & AM, and Military Rites will be conducted by Hillsville VFW Post 1115.
