Burnette, Sr.
August 10, 1950 – February 15, 2018
Another Vietnam Veteran has fought his final battle. James Dexter Burnette, Sr. lost his fight against his 2nd lifetime cancer on February 15, 2018 at the age of 67. Jim proudly served his country during the Vietnam Conflict (1969 -71). He received many awards and accommodations including three Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.
Jim was born August 10, 1950 in Wilmington, Delaware to the late Clarence and Loraine Hooker Burnette. He and his family returned to Carroll County, Virginia where he attended Hillsville High School and later Wytheville Community College and Virginia Tech.
He married the love of his life, Linda Murphy on August 3, 1974. During his life Jim was a successful small business owner in Carroll County, including but not limited to Carquest, Burnette Leasing Inc. and Computech. Jim was a member of the Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, and Kazim Shrine Temple.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 43 years, Linda Murphy Burnette and his son, James D. Burnette, Jr. and his wife, Beth of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 22,2 018 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel at 2:00 PM with friends and family speaking. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Hillsville V.F.W. Grover King Post 1115. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
