Jack Linwood Slate, 79 of Hillsville, VA died June 17, 2006 at his home. He was born November 7, 1926 at Switchback, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert & Dovie Scott Slate, two infant brothers, sister Billie Slate Quesenberry Ross and sister Joanne Slate Smith & husband Van Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Nellie Ogle Slate of the home; daughter Deborah Slate Harrod Ginder & husband Carl Victor Ginder of Hillsville; sons & daughters-in-law Anthony Linwood & Colleen Malone Slate of King, NC, Martin Dwayne & Karen Dalton Slate of Hillsville, and Robert Guydell & Peggy Cassell Slate of Hillsville; grandchildren & spouses Kevin Michael Harrod, Joshua Michael & Kristen Sims Harrod, Kaci Lea Slate, John Remington & Amanda Sutphin Slate, Megan Lenora Slate, Zachary Ryan Slate, Susan Marie Slate & David Guydell Slate; great grandchildren Elijah James Harrod DeBoe and Ella Claire Harrod DeBoe and their mother Heather Neff Harrod DeBoe; brother & wife Richard Price & Rachel Quesenberry Slate of Hillsville; and many nephews and nieces.
Jack was retired from Hercules, Inc. as office manger with the Magnox Plant in Pulaski, VA. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Ground Force Testing Board, Fort Knox, KY and was honorably discharged as a T/5 in 1947. Jack was received into the fellowship at Dinwiddie Presbyterian Church by Reverend Bob Childress on July 27, 1947 and served as church treasurer for several years, as well as deacon, elder and elder emeritus.
Breaking with tradition, there will be no funeral or graveside services, as he believed we preach our funeral each day we live. The body is interred in Liberty Hill Cemetery in Hillsville. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, June 23, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at Dinwiddie Presbyterian Church with Pastor Carl Ginder officiating. A covered dish dinner will follow. Mr. Slate requested no flowers and that memorials be made instead to the Dinwiddie Presbyterian Church, 2698 Homestead Road, Hillsville, VA 24343.
