Imogene Dalton
Henley
May 8, 1928 – December 14, 2018
Imogene Dalton Henley joined her Heavenly family on Fri, Dec. 14, 2018 after 90 years. The scion of her family, she led, along with her husband, Edward, with love, grace, dignity, strength, and poise. She helped guide 2 sons, Jimmy and Johnny, 2 granddaughters, Joy and Pam, and 6 great grandchildren, daughter- in-law Doris, special niece Bobbie Jo Henley and special nephew Bruce Dalton, all who will sorely miss her.
Imogene grew up in Sylvatus, VA graduating from Sylvatus High School in 1946 where she played basketball. She worked many places in Hillsville over the years, from the Hillsville Cleaners on Main St to Dr. Worrell's dentist office. She retired from the Sears Store in Mt. Airy, but retirement didn't suit her. She continued working part-time and realizing what a valuable commodity time is, she joyfully gave hers. For decades, Imogene served at the VFW Post 1115, of which she was a lifetime member, holding various positions within the Ladies Auxiliary and worked the annual Gun Show and Flea Market over 40 years. Imogene volunteered at Twin County Hospital and Southwestern Virginia Training Center. At both places, she became Volunteer of the Month because of her dedicated service. She was also Volunteer of the Year at Twin County Hospital.
Imogene loved to travel with her husband of 62 years. Over many Sunshine tours, they visited Mexico, Canada, and every state, except Hawaii. Along with their annual trip to Myrtle Beach, they took many short trips with family to more local events. Outdoor Dramas, lighthouses, Dollywood, anything to expand horizons, was fair game. During one memorable trip, she even rode the Big Bad Wolf at Busch Gardens, at age 64. No one was allowed on another roller coaster for the rest of the trip.
Many in our community knew her as "Memaa". Either by the tags on her car, or through one of the charities or originations she was a member of, or through one of the many activities she participated in with her granddaughters. Those privileged to know Memaa, knew her beautiful smile, generous heart, and no nonsense approach to life. While she wouldn't tolerate a fool, she always had open arms and wisdom during troubling times. Her innate strength saw her through the passing of her parents, brothers, sisters, son, Jimmy, her husband, Edward, and great grandson, Benjamin. She came through any tragedy stronger and more resilient. Her faith, witnessed by her church family at Fairview Presbyterian, was the root of that strength.
The number of lives touched by this incredible woman through personal relationships or volunteer work is innumerable. Heaven gained a true Angel and this family, community, world lost a truly great lady.
In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Mountain Valley Hospice, or Fairview Presbyterian Church.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Pastor David Bays officiating. Burial will follow at Monta Vista Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 17, 2018 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the Henley family.
